Gender Topics: Project Overview and Materials

Overview

 

Assignment:  

Research a gender-related topic and present it to an audience.  

Requirements:  

Your presentation should have a minimum of 10 slides and include the following:

  1. Background on the topic (assume your audience is NOT familiar with the topic)

  2. Audiovisual or Video component for clarification  or example (i.e. a music video, commercial, magazine cover, etc. )

  3. Evidence/support/ expertise on the effects of your topic on different group: (i.e:  women, men, Marginalized groups, etc.)

  4. Possible solutions to this issue:  Is the issue discussed in politics or lawmaking? Was it discussed in a presidential debate?  What are they proposing?  If there are no solutions, or a lack of agreement about solutions, what do you propose?

  5. Questions for the class that will spark debate/discussion

  6. Minimum of 4 sources- You must use at least 2 non-website sources (print, database, e-book)

  7. Cite ALL sources in an MLA Works Cited

Possible Topics:

Different ways men and women are portrayed in crime videos or tv shows

Different ways men and women are portrayed in music and/or music videos

Transgender children and reassignment at a young age

Transgender adults and reassignment

Video games and portrayal of men versus women

Advertisement and the portrayal of men versus women

Gender achievement gap in education or work

Gender neutral bathrooms / "bathroom laws" affecting trans or nonbinary people

 

The idea of gender roles in work or relationships

What is masculinity? How has this evolved over the decades?

How has feminism changed? What does it mean today?

Transgender equality

Pay inequality

Men Vs. Women in the Military or Armed Forces

Anime and depiction of females

Gender equality in sports

Gender determination (testing) in sports

Source Evaluation Criteria

Consider the following when determining if a sources is credible:

Relevance and Coverage 
  • What topics are covered?
  • What does this page offer that may not be found elsewhere?
  • What is its value?  Is the information useful?  (To its intended audience)
  • How in-depth is the material?  Does it just skim the topic or give a lot of details?
Currency
  • Is the page dated? 
  • When was the site created?  Is it older than 5 years?
  • When was the site last updated?
  • How current are the links? Have some expired or moved?
  • Have you found more current information from other sources? 

Authority

  • Is there an author listed?  
  • Is the author qualified to give information on the subject? Is he or she an expert?
  • Who is the sponsor of the site? Can they be trusted?
  • Is there any information provided about the author or sponsor, or a link to it?
  • If no author or sponsor is given, is there any other way to determine the site’s origin?
Accuracy
  • Is the information reliable and error-free?
  • Is there an editor or someone who checks the information?
  • Can you find the same information from another source?
  • Are there any sources cited?
Objectivity
  • Does the site attempt to present opinions as facts?
  • Are all sides of the subject or argument presented or accounted for?
  • Is the page designed to sway your opinion toward a certain idea or belief?
  • Is there advertising on the page?
  • Is the author or sponsor well known for their strong beliefs?
